G F Tomlinson Building Limited has completed the demolition work to make way for a new Youth and Children’s Centre in the town centre of Retford. To commemorate this occasion Nottinghamshire County Council’s Councillor Baron with the help of two local youngsters knocked down the last brick wall from the existing structure on Monday 11th February 2008.
The new building will be utilised as a single storey Children’s and Young People’s Centre providing integrated services for young children and their families and an eagerly awaited youth service.
The Centre will bring together childcare, early education, health and family support services for families with children under 5 years olds and will also allow the Youth service to make contact with the 13 – 19 year old population in the Retford area offering a wide range of activities, accreditations and advice.
Eddie Burgess, Senior Youth Worker mentioned “The youth service is about providing an informal educational experience, by teaching young people in a relaxed manner, we then can build on trust and relationships”.
The project is part of the Nottinghamshire Construction Framework and forms part of the Council’s long term strategy to upgrade the quality and quantity of services for young people, this being one of five new Youth and Children’s Centres being constructed across the county over the next two years by contractor partner G F Tomlinson Building Limited.
Councillor Baron commented “I believe that, in partnership with young people and the community, the holistic approach to combining both the Youth and Children’s Service will offer a cohesive development for the well being and benefit to the Retford area.”
Nick Banks, Construction Director for Tomlinson said “ We are delighted to have been entrusted by Nottinghamshire County Council to deliver these much needed facilities through the Nottinghamshire Construction Framework. Adopting this holistic approach to the programme of schemes will provide opportunity for efficiencies and the delivery of high quality through travelling up the learning curve together as integrated teams”.
