Getting the Health and Safety Message Across

With work already well underway on the Leicestershire Construction Framework’s new build project Surestart Centre at Measham Primary School. Contractor Partner G F Tomlinson Building Limited were keen to encourage school involvement early on in the scheme.

The company is always looking to provide social added value through the work they undertake and particularly on Education schemes like to involve children in the project in order to enhance extra curricular activity and to remove the curiosity element surrounding site activities.

The children at Measham Primary School learnt the importance of Health and Safety on a building site through special assembly visits organised by members of G F Tomlinson Staff. Tomlinson’s Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) Advisor Simon Ratcliffe talked through the importance of Health and Safety, the dangers on site and why the children should never play on a building site, Simon was assisted with his presentation by Considerate Constructor’s mascot Ivor Goodsite!

Tomlinsons register all their projects on the nationally acclaimed Considerate Constructor’s Scheme to benchmark their performance on site on aspects of Health & Safety, Environmental, Consideration, Communication and being a Good Neighbours.

The children were keen to get involved in the activities which included, getting dressed up in site safety equipment and watching a short film highlighting the dangers children can face on a building site. This was followed by a question and answer session.

To ensure that the Health and Safety message had been understood, Tomlinson’s set the children the challenge of entering a competition. The children were asked to design a Health and Safety poster incorporating elements that they had learnt in the assembly.

The completed posters will then be displayed on the site fencing surrounding the site to inform all school occupants and visitors of the potential health and safety risks on building sites

Site Manager, Alan Frettsome commented, “the children see us everyday, so it’s nice to get them involved, and what better way than with an important subject like Health and Safety.”
