First Brick is laid at Greener School shoots up

Pupils and parents pick name which continues village heritage on site.

G F Tomlinson Building Ltd are currently constructing a new primary in the Derby. The first brick has been laid at what will be one of the biggest and most environmentally-friendly primary schools.

The building on the site of the former Village Community School will replace three city schools, which will merge in Summer 2008.

A ceremonial bricklaying event took place to mark the progress of work on the newly named Village Primary School with Councillor Sarah Bolton, city council cabinet member for children and young people doing the honours.

The £8.4m school will cater for 4-11 year olds and have a nursery for three year olds and will incorporate Normanton Junior and Infant School and Sunny Hill infants.

The school will feature a grass roof for insulation, which will also absorb carbon dioxide from the air. The roof will catch rainwater which will be used for flushing toilers.

The school will have 15 classrooms, three halls, a computing suite, a library and meeting rooms.

Adam Dowling, five of Normanton Village Infants, said: ‘Our new school will be great. I can’t wait to go there!’

Stuart Lawrence, director of G F Tomlinson Building Ltd commented, ‘we are delighted on the progress being made on site and are pleased to be associated with what is a high profile and prestigious project for Derby City Council. We will use our extensive experience working in the education sector to provide a facility that the school and the local community can be truly proud of.’
