Contract Go Ahead at Trent College

G F Tomlinson Building Limited was delighted to be formally awarded the contract at Trent College to construct a Pavilion/Dining Hall Annexe.

Since opening in 1868, Trent College has grown considerably on its original site in Long Eaton, Nottingham. In 1999 the college opened The Elms Junior School on an adjacent site, with a further extension in 2002 splitting the junior school into the Lower and Upper Elms.

Trent College and The Elms currently comprises of approximately 1480 staff and pupils. The programme includes a multi-million pound new catering facility and an extensive new library at the historic Long Eaton school.

G F Tomlinson is due to start on site, Stuart Lawrence, General Manager of G F Tomlinson Building Limited commented “We are delighted to be working with the whole project team and our experience of working in the Education sector means we have a good understanding of the unique requirements it places on us as contractor. One of the key elements of this project is to ensure high levels of Health and Safety are maintained at all times as work will be carried out in a live occupied environment”.

Once completed, the new catering facility will leave the existing dining hall free to be converted into an extensive academic library for Trent pupils.  The new library would provide a wide range of multimedia and resources to support learning and teaching throughout the school.

Gareth Leggeat of Franklin Ellis Architects, mentioned “The choice of form and materials was based on producing a modern, visually striking pavilion, which echoes the facetted plan of the existing chapel and is sensitive to the historical significance of the main building. The new building will provide a focus for a wide range of activities, from its day to day use for assemblies and dining, to regular sports events and outside catering functions.”

Gill Dixon, who joined Trent College, located in Derby Road, Long Eaton, a year ago as the school's ninth Head, said: "This is the first phase in a programme of building work which will help take Trent College into a very successful and memorable period in its history.

"By taking down our old pavilion, which dates from the early 1990s, we will be able to provide an outstanding dining facility on the main Trent College site and a venue which will also be big enough to accommodate all of the Trent College staff and students for whole school assemblies and major events. But more importantly, it will provide us with the vital space at the heart of our school to build a new library.”
