Birmingham Based construction company GF Tomlinson Building Limited organised a ‘sod turning’ ceremony recently to launch the start of a new nursery extension to Featherstone Nursery, Erdington.
The £750k scheme involves the construction of a two-storey building to cater for a new age range of children to attend Featherstone nursery. The new facilities will link via a corridor to the existing building, including two large nursery rooms, baby changing areas, toilets, a kitchen and a lift.
The scheme is in collaboration with Birmingham City Council’s Education Department, under the Birmingham Construction Partnership. The Partnership involves three building contractors, including Tomlinson working alongside Urban Design (the Council’s construction design and maintenance service). The contractors have made a commitment to work together as a team for five years, focusing on efforts to improve the design, cost and quality of buildings for the city during this time.
Head Teacher, Elaine Dupree said “We are all excited with the prospect of the new nursery extension and I am confident that once the scheme is complete we will have a facility that the whole area will benefit from”.
Work is expected to be completed by April 2006 and it is intended that the existing nursery will remain fully operational during the construction period.
Peter Hood, Regional Director at G F Tomlinson mentions “We are delighted to be working with the whole project team and our experience of working in the Education sector means we have a good understanding of the unique requirements it places on us as contractor. One of the key elements of this project is to ensure high levels of Health and Safety are maintained at all times as work will be carried out in a live occupied environment during nursery opening hours”.
