Derby based Construction Company GF Tomlinson Building Limited has marked progress on the major new extension to Derbyshire’s largest school, John Port School in Etwall, with a ‘topping out’ ceremony held on Thursday 1 December 2005.
On hand to do the honours were Chair of Governors and Leader of South Derbyshire District Council, Councilor Barrie Whyman, Head Teacher, Michael Crane, Architect Phil Bryan of Horsley Huber Associates and G F Tomlinson Commercial Director Andy Sewards.
The £3.5m scheme involves the construction of a new building to house 12 classrooms for the faculty of humanities and a range of smaller classrooms for the faculty of curriculum support.
It will also include a medical centre and offices for other agencies who work with students, including career and advices service Connexions, educational psychologists, social services and health visitors.
The finished project will enable John Port to continue with their ongoing plans to become an ‘extended school’ which is a new Government initiative to create better links between schools, communities and local services.
The idea is based around the principle that schools are often seen as focal points for communities and therefore facilities in extended schools could be used out of school hours by the community, the benefit being that all the services are located in one place.
Tomlinson is no stranger to the school site, having successfully completed several schemes at John Port in the past, including a new technology building.
Education accounts for approximately 40 per cent of the company’s annual workload. This extensive experience has seen Tomlinson secure long Strategic Partnership Agreements with several local authorities such as Derbyshire County Council, Derby City Council and Birmingham City Council on their Schools Capital Building Works Programme over the next few years.
Andy Sewards commented “We are delighted on the progress being made on site and are pleased to be associated with what is a prestigious project for the school and the local community”.
Councilor Barrie Whyman remarked, ‘These modern facilities will become a focal point for the local community. This will significantly improve teaching and learning facilities for the staff and students of the school’.
