30/08/2005 - gf tomlinson completes derby hospital community facility

It has now been 8 months since Derby based construction company GF Tomlinson Building Limited started work on the new multi-million pound Community Facility at the DRI and those who visit the hospital will have noticed the rapid growth of the two storey building.

In recognition of this, a ‘topping out’ ceremony has recently been held to celebrate the completion of the roof construction, reaching a significant milestone on the scheme by providing a water tight structure.

On hand to do the honours of laying the last ceremonial roof tile were Bob Laxton MP, Julie Acred, Chief Executive of the Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Trust Chairman Brenda Remington and Roy Collis, Managing Director of GF Tomlinson Building Limited, who were also joined by over 30 invited guests.

The contract is part of an overall £15.7m development on the DRI site and involves the construction of a four ward, 108 bed extension which will enable the relocation of the Grove Hospital, Shardlow, two wards managed by the Derbyshire Mental Health Trust at Derby City General Hospital, and some mental health patient accommodation currently based at Kingsway Hospital.

At the end of the 72 week project, patients will benefit from modern, flexible accommodation which is specially designed in accordance with the very latest privacy and dignity guidelines required by the NHS plan.

Roy Collis, Managing Director of GF Tomlinson Building Limited said “We were delighted to hold the ‘topping out’ ceremony to commemorate the good progress being made on site. Any project undertaken within the confines of a live occupied hospital environment places many unique demands on a contractor and the Community Facility is no exception. Space is extremely tight and therefore site traffic and resources have to be well managed. All parties involved in the project can be proud of the achievements so far and the ongoing progress being made. The resulting scheme will be one that will truly benefit the Trust and the City of Derby”.
