GF Tomlinson Building Limited recently took part in a job shadowing initiative as part of their process to improve working practices within the BCP framework. Michelle Humphries, Trainee Quantity Surveyor from Tomlinson’s Tyburn Road office shadowed Sean Murphey, Quantity Surveyor from Urban Design for a one week period.
The main aim of the initiative is to provide members of the Partnership with a better understanding of each persons role, the requirements of the individual job functions and how this impacts on each others company’s processes.
During Michelle’s time at Urban Design, she accompanied Sean on a DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) audit assessment exercise at King’s Norton Library. This presented Michelle with an opportunity to put the theory she had learned whilst taking her degree into practice and helped her to understand the fundamentals of what an audit encompasses, in particular what legal requirements are placed on clients to comply with the act.
Michelle commented “Job shadowing helped me build partnership relationships. I liaised with many staff members from Urban Design who I hadn’t met with previously and also gained a clear insight into how the different departments worked. The job shadowing initiative was an extremely rewarding and a valuable learning curve which helped to develop a strong team working environment with all members in the project team. I would be more than happy to reciprocate the experience”.
GF Tomlinson intend to roll out the job shadowing initiative in the future to encompass other roles and areas of interface within the partnering process.
