Derby based Construction Company, GF Tomlinson Building Limited recently took part in a ‘Sod Cutting’ ceremony to commemorate the start of a major new extension to Derbyshire’s largest school, John Port School in the village of Etwall, Derby.
Local dignitaries in attendance included MP for South Derbyshire, Mark Todd, Chair of Education for Derbyshire Council, Alan Charles, Chair of Governors and Leader of South Derbyshire District Council, Andy Cox, Headteacher, Michael Crane and Managing Director of G F Tomlinson Building Limited, Roy Collis.
The £3.5m scheme involves the construction of a new building to house 12 classrooms for the faculty of humanities and a range of smaller classrooms for the faculty of curriculum support. It will also include a medical centre and offices for other agencies who work with students, including career and advice service ‘Connexions’, educational psychologists, social services and health visitors.
The finished project will enable John Port to continue with their ongoing plans to become an ‘extended school’ which is a new Government initiative to create better links between schools, communities and services. The idea is based around the principle that schools are often seen as focal points of communities and therefore facilities in ‘extended schools’ could be used out of school hours by the community, the benefit being that all the services are located in one place.
Tomlinson are no strangers to the school site, having successfully completed several schemes at John Port in the past, including a new technology building.
Education accounts for approximately 40% of the company’s annual workload. This extensive experience has seen Tomlinson secure long term Strategic Partnership Agreements with several Local Authorities such as Derbyshire County Council, Derby City Council and Birmingham City Council on their Schools Capital Building Works Programme over the next few years.
Roy Collis, Managing Director of G F Tomlinson Building Limited commented “We are delighted to be working on John Port School once again on what is a prestigious project for the school and the community. The whole project team which includes school staff, the professional team and ourselves are working well together with a strong team spirit clearly evident. We will use our extensive experience working in the Education Sector to provide a facility that the school and the local community can be truly proud of”.
