Midlands construction group Tomlinson proudly presented a cheque for £5000 to a charity set up to support a purposeful building project at Lamdon School Boys Hostel in Leh, Ladakh.
Ladakh is in north western India, close to the borders with Pakistan, China and Tibet, a staggeringly beautiful province in the Himalayas affectionately known by many as “Little Tibet”.
Lamdon School, in Leh, was founded in 1973 to educate children beyond the primary stage and to preserve the rich cultural heritage of this region. There are some 1200 children in the school with many coming from very remote areas and often from poor families. Indeed, many of the pupils are orphans, who would otherwise stand no chance of receiving a formal education. The school serves an area that is so remote that it is effectively cut off from the world for eight months of the year, when snow blocks the high passes and it is often not possible for the 350 children who are boarders to go home to their families.
In August 2005, a group of friends, some of whom already sponsor children, visited the school and met some of the pupils’ parents. On their visit they viewed the original boys’ hostel now well past its useful life. There are 12 boys sleeping in a room 15’ by 15’ with bare floors, minimal natural light, ventilation through broken windows, no running water and no heating despite temperatures regularly falling to -35ºC in winter. When the visitors, Colin & Helen Maber, Philip & Jo Giles, Clive & Pauline Pitts and Michael & Marty Meredith saw the site for the boys’ hostel they decided to set up a charity to help raise the £65,000 needed to build new accommodation.
The charity has a registered number and can now accept donations with Gift Aid, which means donations will be worth 28% more. With tremendous support from many events and organisations they currently have raised a total £53,654 of their £65,000 target. Mr Sewards, Chairman of G F Tomlinson Group Limited said “We are pleased to support such a worthwhile cause and that 100% of the money we have donated will go directly to the fund to support the building project”.
