G F Tomlinson the Derby based major civil engineering and building contractor was invited to showcase a working example of an innovation at the recently held Severn Trent Water’s 13th Annual Quality Working Day at Stoneleigh Park Exhibition and Conference Centre. The construction company has had a long-term collaborative partnering agreement with Severn Trent Water for over 15 years.
The civil engineering project on show was the reconstruction of Castle Vale Pumping Station with a clear emphasis on ‘innovation solutions through teamwork’. The existing facility could be expressed as a “dinosaur” among pumping stations.
The original proposal was to replace the existing arrangement with a new system however, G F Tomlinson associated high risk factors and problems with these proposals, which included very restrictive site conditions with probable land acquisition required. Also highly contaminated ground conditions with significant environmental and operational risks.
G F Tomlinson provided innovative solutions including reusing parts of the existing structures and designing and installing a sophisticated Mechanical and Electrical control system to regulate the variable flow conditions. These ideas were actively supported by Severn Trent Water and provided the following benefits to the Client.
Additional land purchase was avoided, costs and risks associated with the contaminated ground were drastically reduced and the project was delivered within budget.
Chairman of G F Tomlinson Group, Barry Sewards commented “ We were delighted to be asked to showcase our project and demonstrate what we do on all projects we undertake- that is to look at how we can improve the way things are done. The project clearly highlights that when a team works together innovation becomes a reality”.
