30/06/2006 - derby hospitals to be supported by new build walk in centre

Construction work has started on a new purpose built Walk In health centre for Derby.  The project is a collaboration between Central and Greater Derby Primary Care Trusts, Derby Hospital and G F Tomlinson Building Ltd.

NHS Walk In Centres are designed to provide quick access to advice and treatment for minor ailments. Derby’s Walk In Centre will be located at the junction of Osmaston Road and Litchurch Street in Derby city centre. The PCTs and the Hospital are working in partnership to design and build the Walk In Centre, situated on the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary Hospital site.

The Walk In Centre will offer healthcare information and treatment for

  • Coughs and colds
  • Minor cuts and bruises
  • Skin complaints
  • Men's and women's health problems
  • Those needing emergency contraception

As well as information around health promotion, healthy eating, smoking cessation and sexual health and a base for other services such as Citizens Advice Bureau, Social Services, Out of Hours Service and Pharmacy Services.

The new centre is due to open in April 2007.

The PCTs’ Chief Executive Prem Singh and Derby Hospital’s Assistant Chief Executive Brian Ibell represented the local NHS for the event. Prem Singh commented:

“The Walk In Centre will be an important part of the services the NHS can offer to the people of Derby and the surrounding areas. It will mean convenient and easy access to a range of health and social care services for our local population.”

Brian Ibell also welcomed the development:

"The Foundation Trust welcomes the PCT development of a Walk In Centre. Being part of the future City Centre Community Facility, it will complement services offered on the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary site and form part of our joint integrated care package to our patients".

Prem and Brian were joined by Tomlinson’s Chairman Barry Sewards, Group Commercial and Property Director Andy Sewards and Steve Smith, Project Manager.

Barry Sewards said that Tomlinson’s were honoured to be involved with further developments at the infirmary: “We are certain that this added facility will be of great support to all of the other services available on site."
