New Sustainable Children’s Centre at the Heart of the Community

It’s green for go for the new Children’s Centre being built in Etwall. The £550,000 scheme, which is funded by Derbyshire County Council is to be located on the John Port School site at Etwall and will be constructed by Derby contractors G F Tomlinson Building Limited.

The new facility will be at the centre of all community facilities of Etwall and the surrounding areas and will offer a variety of services for families with young children, which include family support, debt and benefit advice, health services together with adult and community learning services and a Jobcentre Plus. Along side these it will also feature a variety of leisure facilities which includes a large activity room, two smaller rooms, a meeting and interview area along with office space and an enclosed play area.

As well as being partially green in colour it also boasts a number of sustainable features including a ‘green’ sedum roof, timber cladding and a design that maximises the use of natural light and ventilation.

A ‘ground breaking’ ceremony to commemorate the start of this exciting scheme was held on today at the school, where all stakeholders gathered to celebrate the occasion.

Wendy Sharp, Head teacher for John Port School commented: “I am absolutely delighted that the construction phase of this project has now begun. The ‘Etwall Children's Centre’, will bring a much needed resource to our community and Governors are pleased that Derbyshire County Council decided to invest in what is the first Children's Centre on a Secondary School site. We look forward to the opening of the new Centre in the late spring/early summer of next year.”

Barry Sewards, Chairman of G F Tomlinson Building Limited, said: “Projects involving the community are always enjoyable to construct, giving Tomlinson’s great satisfaction upon their completion when all the facilities are in use.”

The scheme is due for completion in April 2010.
