Mr Sprag - 99 and Always out

Birmingham resident, Mr. Spragg couldn’t believe his eyes when employees from G F Tomlinson Birmingham Ltd arrived at his home with a card signed by the Director, balloons and a birthday cake, as a surprise for his 99th birthday.

G F Tomlinson Birmingham Ltd recently completed the installation of Mr. Spragg’s new kitchen and bathroom as part of Birmingham City Council’s Kitchen and Bathroom Programme.  Mr. Spragg, who has lived in the property for 32 years, was absolutely delighted with the work, especially the kitchen as he still loves to do his own cooking and he can’t wait to experiment with some new recipes.

Mr. Spragg was born in Ward End on the 27th January 1913. He joined the Royal Air Force and during the Second World War was stationed in the Middle East. He said although he didn’t get to see much action he was proud to have done his bit. His Corporal was none other than football legend, Sir Stanley Matthews but as Mr. Spragg wasn’t much of a football follower, he had no idea who he was!

Mr Spragg married in 1940 and he and his wife Phyllis had 2 daughters. After leaving the Air Force he worked at Wolseley Engineering in Birmingham where they made parts for the Lancaster Bomber. Although his duties involved working on the shop floor, he deputised as the works photographer. After being asked by a colleague to do the photography for her wedding more requests for his services came in so he decided to take early retirement.  His photography career took off (pardon the pun) and the bookings came flooding in so much so that he often had to call on the assistance of his daughter Jacqueline, to cope with the volume of work. He was also the photographer for the wedding of Aston Villa’s Vic Crow.

Mr Spragg is always out and about and still enjoys photography and regularly takes the bus into town to go visit photography and other exhibitions.

Mr Spragg will be celebrating with a fish and chip lunch and a family get together later on.

“We can’t thank Tomlinson’s enough. The team have been so professional and patient. Dad is fiercely independent and this new kitchen is fantastic for him. We have got to know the team really well. Steve Veraca and Pauline Rouse have been wonderful.”

£1.9 million revamp for Eastgate

Work is to start on a £1.9 million scheme of improvements at the Eastgate Day Services centre in Worksop.

Nottinghamshire County Council is totally transforming the centre at Albion Close as part of a £6 million modernisation of day care service buildings across the county. The Eastgate scheme is the largest in Nottinghamshire.

The interior of the building will be completely stripped out as part of the works being undertaken on behalf of the County Council by G F Tomlinson Building Ltd. The work will see the construction and fitting out of:

  • Four multi-purpose activity lounges
  • Two activity rooms
  • Main session room
  • An audio sensory room
  • Therapy / nursing room
  • Cafe and dining area
  • Improved toilets and changing facilities for people with disabilities
  • Landscaping work to the exterior of the building and the creation of a secure garden area
  • Remodelled entrance / reception area with improved security to the main centre.

Many of the new features being added to the building are being introduced following suggestions from users of Eastgate.

The building was previously used exclusively by people with physical disabilities, but the work will open up a wide range of day service activities to older people and people with learning disabilities.

The refurbishment will also allow Eastgate to be used for a much wider range of activities in the future including arts and crafts, drama, activities promoting a healthy diet, education and leisure pursuits and support for individual's needs.

The refurbished building will also be available for use by the wider community, with groups able to hire rooms for meetings and activities.

Work starts today (23 January 2012), with the new look Eastgate centre scheduled to re-open in the Autumn.

In the meantime, users of Eastgate are being accommodated at the nearby Greenacre Day Services building on Wingfield Avenue.

Nottinghamshire County Council decided to modernise its Day Services following a countywide review. The review found that Day Services weren't making efficient use of buildings, which were operating at an average of just 39% of their capacity.

Following the programme of building improvements across the county, day services will operate from 13 multi-purpose centres, including Eastgate.

Coun Kevin Rostance, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health at Nottinghamshire County Council said, "The County Council's investment in Eastgate will make a huge difference for users and is the biggest in our countywide upgrade of day services buildings. When complete, existing users will be thrilled with the results and it will provide a welcoming environment for new users.

"With the pressure on budgets we've had to be resourceful and imaginative with our review of day service provision. However when all the improvements have been made and everyone is settled at their new look venue, I am confident we will provide a better, more modern service in more welcoming surroundings."

Barry Sewards, Chairman of G F Tomlinson Building Ltd added, "We are delighted to be entrusted with the refurbishment of Eastgate Day Services Centre for the local community to transform this much needed facility for both new and existing users.

"We will use our extensive experience on projects of this nature to deliver a quality project on time to confirm their trust in our abilities and support their innovation."

Pledging to deliver construction skills for the future

27 local companies have pledged to boost skills training for young people with a view to delivering construction and housing improvements including sustainable “green” technologies in more homes and businesses across the region.  A Skills Pledge led by G F Tomlinson Birmingham Ltd and Birmingham Metropolitan College will provide apprenticeships and training to a range of construction industry specialists over the next 12 months which could be extended up to five years.

Phil Walker, General Manager and Director of G F Tomlinson Birmingham Ltd commented: “G F Tomlinson have always invested in apprenticeships and technical trainees, but it has been evident over the last 18 months that with rising unemployment figures, it is our responsibility to do more, as a well established building contractor operating throughout the East and West Midlands.

“Our premier supply chain embraced the Skills Pledge initiative.  Our dedicated Apprentice & Trainee Co-ordinator Pam Rayment, has provided the guidance and 27 contractors pledged to support the training of their current staff along with creating a number of apprenticeship and training opportunities.  2012 promises to be a very exciting and rewarding time for us all involved.”

Apprenticeships in engineering and qualifications in construction and sustainable energies will be delivered at Birmingham Metropolitan College’s state-of-the-art Baxi Group Innovation Academy in industry standard engineering workshops.

The qualifications will provide opportunities for learners to be trained for traditional construction skills and the rapidly expanding environmental technology sector.  It is predicted that over 1 million people could be in “green” jobs by the end of the decade.   A new Sustainability Centre will also promote energy and resource efficiency through solar photovoltaic solutions, solar thermal systems, micro generation boilers, ground source heat pumps, air to air heat pumps, wind power and grey water recycling.

Principal and Chief Executive of Birmingham Metropolitan College Dr Christine Braddock CBE added: “The Skills Pledge demonstrates how committed these 27 construction companies in the G F Tomlinson supply chain are to providing relevant education and training for their employees.  The businesses that have signed up have identified skills gaps and opportunities to evolve and progress, which the College will support through an innovative and effective curriculum.

“With environmental sustainability increasing its impact on the way we live and work, we are confident that G F Tomlinson and their supply chain members will pave the way for other organisations to support youth unemployment, as well as deliver more green technology across the wider region.”

Derby Company are all Heart in Colleagues Memory

A team of thirty eight friends, family members and colleagues of a Derby man who died of a heart attack in February are taking on a challenge in his memory.

Twenty-nine employees from GF Tomlinson, in Alfreton Road, are embarking on the British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) High Peak Trail Winter Challenge Walk on Sunday 20 November in memory of Mark Holmes.

Mark, who had worked at GF Tomlinson for 11 years as a site manager, was out for an evening run on February 14 when he suffered a massive heart attack and died, aged 53.

His wife, Melanie, discovered the news when she was forced to ring the hospital after he didn’t return to their Melbourne home. It was a devastating shock for Melanie and their children Jake (21) and Louie (17).

Mark’s colleagues also struggled to come to terms with the news and decided it would be fitting to do something in his memory. So 22 workers, aged between 19 and 60, and friends of Mark, will join Jake – who also works at GF Tomlinson, and Louie for the 17 mile winter trek.

The ‘Tomlinson Trekkers’ hope to raise £3,000 for the vital work of the BHF. Team leader, Sarah Brammer, a marketing coordinator at GF Tomlinson, said: “Mark was such a nice man and was really popular at work. He was a happy go lucky guy and always had a smile on his face. It was a real big shock for everyone when we came in to work to find out the tragic news. We felt that taking on this challenge was a perfect way for us all to remember Mark in our own way.”

BHF Regional Events Organiser Helen Whiteley added: “I would like to thank everyone at GF Tomlinson for uniting and taking on this event in such sad circumstances. Sadly heart disease remains the UK’s biggest killer and it doesn’t care who it affects. We need to do all we can to continue the fight against it and we can’t do it without your support.”

To sponsor the Tomlinson Trekkers, visit www.virginmoneygiving.com/tomlinsons

To sign up, entry is £10 for adults. Register online at bhf.org.uk/highpeak, call free phone 0800 169 3672 or email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) for entry forms.

New £1m Centre Boosts Tramway Attraction

THE man who introduced trams to Britain was an American... called George Train and trams were needed to replace horses because of the piles of dung the animals left in the streets.

You might not know these facts already, but you would if you popped along to Crich Tramway Village's new £1 million learning centre.

Officially opened on Tuesday 26th July by Andrew Lewer, leader of Derbyshire County Council, it is hoped the attraction will boost the number of people coming through the gates.

Already the village, which features old trams restored to working order, has 100,000 visitors every year.

Glynn Wilton, the curator of the tramway village's museum, is realistic about the appeal of trams alone, but says they should be viewed in a wider context.

"We are aware that trams are a technical, industrial subject, so they can appear quite dull," he said.

"But the history of trams is about people, the need to move people around, and the reasons behind that. It's fascinating."

Mr Wilton is full of interesting facts about trams, details that are displayed in the learning centre, which is packed with interactive exhibits.

One asks kids to choose which food to give to horses, including sausages or pizza, while a second gets them to pump a bellows. Another station has a pile of horse manure and a vat of urine, the same amount one animal would produce in a day, to show what was dumped on Victorian streets.

The centre describes the history of trams, including the reasons why they were needed, namely the industrial revolution, the growth of the middle classes and the spread of diseases. While the exhibits are upstairs, downstairs is a classroom where kids can be taught about life in the 1800s.

The building which dates back to 1841 and was once used by George Stephenson, the man who built the world's first public railway. He ran it as a smithy and wagon works for a line taking limestone from Crich to Ambergate.

The £1 million centre was paid for with Heritage Lottery funds and refurbished by Derby based construction company G F Tomlinson Building Limited.

G F Tomlinson Team up in the Community

Staff at G F Tomlinson and the University of Derby ditched their day jobs, put on their gardening gloves and volunteered their time on Monday 4th July at Beaufort Community Primary School in Derby to create an outdoor space for the school and provide an enhanced learning environment.

This initiative is part of a ‘Business in the Community’ pledge to improve communities through the help of volunteers from local businesses. Several local schools within the inner City of Derby have been identified as being in need of help, with Beaufort Primary School being one. Partnering with staff from G F Tomlinson Group Limited, the University of Derby and Total Hire and Sales Limited, BITC organised this community event which involved the creation of a pathway around the schools planting area, using tractor tyres and new plants to encourage small bugs and insects for the children to study.

Richard Massey, Account Manager of Business in the Community said: “I am always impressed with the impact businesses can make working together for a community win. This is the second project organised by G F Tomlinson combining people, supplies and equipment which has left a legacy”.

Both G F Tomlinson and Beaufort Community Primary School were very grateful to the tree surgeon Greg Long who cut and chipped the overgrown bushes and for the generous donations from Total Hire and Sales, the Derby Garden Centre and CT Tyres.

Phil Harrison, Deputy Head Teacher of Beaufort Community Primary School commented “ This has been an excellent project and the children will certainly benefit from having a great outdoor area. The staff from Tomlinson and the University of Derby worked so hard and the children at the school are very grateful.”

Mr Barry Sewards, Chairman of G F Tomlinson Group Limited said: “As a responsible business, it's brilliant that our staff were able to get involved and give back to our community. We were delighted to support this Business in the Community initiative again and help one of our local schools improve their facilities. This project will have a lasting impact and benefit to the pupils at Beaufort Community Primary School.”

Tomlinson's Triple Crown

It could be said that  Derby based construction Company G F Tomlinson Building Limited are developing the status of ‘by Royal Appointment’ after having three of their projects visited by members of the Royal Family in as many days.

The first visit was from Prince Edward, The Earl of Wessex to Lea Green in Matlock, followed by an official opening at the £3m Sixth Form and Music Centre at Derby High School in Littleover. Derby and the third visit was from the Princess Anne at the official opening ceremony of the £1m newly refurbished Loughborough Magistrates Courts. The Princess Royal, who is patron of The National Association of Citizens Advice Bureau, will open its new premises which forms part of the former Loughborough Magistrates Court. The visit was part of the organisation's 70th anniversary celebrations.

All three schemes demonstrate the versatility of Tomlinson’s skill base, proving that they are as equally at home, sensitively restoring Listed Buildings as they are at constructing a new state of the art music centre or a residential centre for disabled children.

Meadow Lodge at Lea Green in Matlock was handed over last week and opened it’s doors to thier first visitors the day after. Meadow Lodge is a residential care centre for disabled children in the grounds of Lea Green in Derbyshire.

The run-down former Loughborough Magistrates Court consisted of 5 court rooms, cells, prisoner reception and offices with the main building dates back to 1800’s. The Client, Charnwood Borough Council wished to revitalise the facility to extend the life of the building well into the 21st Century. After a careful restoration and refurbishment the new facility now houses - Charnwood Citizen Advice Bureau; Glebe House Trust; The Workers Education Association; 6 Small Business Units and the Council Chambers & Mayors Parlour

Group Director for G F Tomlinson Andy Sewards said “It is a great accolade to have a project that your Company has successfully completed opened by a member of the Royal Family but to have three within days of each other is simply tremendous. As a local Company it has been a pleasure to work for prestigious Clients such as Derby High School, Derbyshire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council on such high profile projects. To be recognised by royalty in this way is very pleasing for the members of staff who worked so hard to successfully deliver the Client’s and End Users full requirements as well as for the local communities within the East Midlands Region”.
