Good news story – G F Tomlinson temporary work experience participant lands full-time employment

G F Tomlinson has been working with employment service Nottingham Jobs for more than two years to provide work experience placements at a number of its sites. The service, run by Nottingham City Council and the Department of Work and Pensions, supports local residents who have been out of work for some time get back into work, providing an opportunity for people to enhance their skills and knowledge.

The first person to benefit from our partnership with Nottingham Jobs was Steve Holecza, who undertook work experience with us for two weeks in 2017, working on the Advanced Manufacturing Building (AMB) at the University of Nottingham.

While on-site, Steve worked alongside the KPR Joinery team, who went on to employ Steve after recognising his potential as a joiner and witnessing first-hand his exceptional work ethic.

Since being employed by KPR, Steve has worked with the G F Tomlinson team on a number of other schemes, including Dorothy Goodman School in Hinckley and Nottingham Trent University’s Global Lounge.

He is currently undertaking the joinery works with KPR Joinery at the Centre for Biomolecular Sciences (CBS) Expansion at the University of Nottingham, working alongside his former project manager at the AMB site, Tim Hubner, once again.

Steve said: “My entire experience working with G F Tomlinson through Nottingham Jobs was fantastic. Being able to work on such an interesting project gave me the opportunity to learn from skilled industry professionals, network and get advice on how to get a full-time job.

“I’m extremely grateful to G F Tomlinson for providing me with my first placement and to KPR Joinery for believing in my abilities and taking me on board as a permanent member of the team. I look forward to continuing to expand my skillset and working alongside the KPR team and G F Tomlinson team for many years to come, and would encourage anyone thinking about getting into construction to enrol with Nottingham Jobs.”

Chris Flint, director at G F Tomlinson, said: “It’s people like Steve that make us feel privileged to be able to offer people work experience. Sometimes you just need to get your foot in the door and lack of experience is often what holds people back from landing employment.

“It’s been great to see Steve working on our sites with KPR joinery and we hope to work alongside him many more times in the future.”

G F Tomlinson continues to support Nottingham Jobs at the CBS Expansion project, helping more people like Steve gain experience to increase their employability opportunities.
