Centre for Biomolecular Sciences Expansion

Approach

An expansion to the University of Nottingham’s Centre for Biomolecular Sciences (CBS) at their University Park Campus, providing a pioneering research centre of excellence in the detection and treatment of serious diseases.The CBS Expansion, houses 350 academics, researchers and PhD students, bringing together experts in diseases from six separate University of Nottingham sites including cancer, cardiovascular, liver, bone and respiratory conditions to encourage collaboration and drive new breakthroughs in treatment and diagnosis.
Engagement with the University and medical research teams throughout was paramount to meeting all stakeholder and end-user requirements.

Construction

Constructed within a confined environment, adjacent occupied buildings, on a live Campus and close to the tram line and A52 Ring Road. To ensure the safety and security of staff, students and general public, secure site fencing was installed and a full-time Logistics Manager co-ordinated all vehicle movements, deliveries and pedestrian access. To overcome the logistical challenges of the tight site, we incorporated two high rise tower cranes to install materials into place and lift the large items of specialist plant. The cranes were utilised by Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue over two weekends for specialist high rise fire rescue training.

The new facility comprises extensive laboratory space, glazed atrium and rooftop plant rooms. Two bridge links connect the new expansion to the existing Boots Science Building and CBS Building. Constructed to BREEAM Excellent, the building features specialist high insulated curtain walling, two green roofs, photovoltaic panels and brise-soleil sunscreens, contributing to the University’s investment into low carbon energy infrastructure. “The new world-class facilities will allow us to meet the demand for increased biomolecular research and strengthens the University’s strong reputation as an international centre in the field.” Senior Capital Projects Manager, University of Nottingham
